Game Report:
Varsity Volleyball
Reading vs. Woburn
October 19, 2017

On Thursday, Woburn played at home in a rematch against Reading. These two teams met previously in Reading three weeks ago, and the Tanners won that game easily 3-0. Now, even further into the season, Woburn looked to extend their winning streak to five.

Before the game, Woburn honored its seniors Laurie Doherty, Jessica Skeffington, Rachael Richards, Brianna Lundin, Julie Miller, Shayla Callahan, Elizabeth Werner, Olivia Perenick, and Julia Barry. Coach Roy have his praise to the team, calling them the most professional group he has worked with. After the players were greeted with applause from the crowd, captain Julia Barry sang the national anthem initiating even more cheering.

Early in the first set, senior Olivia Perenick got into the game for the first time this season. She had been sidelined with a knee injury for the whole season but Coach Roy decided to put her in on Senior Night. Perenick had a few serves, watched her team score a few straight points, and then was subbed out with applause from the crowd. Woburn took that momentum and carried it all the way to a first set victory, 25-11.

Woburn took no time getting out to a lead in the second set. They went up 8-1, and then 19-8 before Reading called a timeout. After the timeout, Reading started to dig in, hoping to even the score. They rattled off a quick 4-0 run and cut the Tanner lead to 22-17. But right when the Reading players and crowd were ready for a comeback, Woburn dug a trench of their own. They scored the last two points of the set, winning 25-19.

Up 2-0, Woburn had a chance to end the game with a sweep and send the crowd home early. They took an 11-6 lead to start, and then stretched that lead to 18-12 before Reading needed a timeout. Once again, Reading came out of the break looking to comeback and get on the board. They cut the score to 23-18, but Woburn won again 25-21. Overall, it was a good test for Woburn to close out teams late in the game. They improved to 15-2 on the season and will take on Lexington this Tuesday.
