The Weekly Washup
by Tyler Movsessian
We had another great week of Tanner
sports this week as we had blowouts, close games, upsets, records broken, and
so much more. To break it all down in such short space is doing it injustice
but, all of your Tanner info for the week will be jam packed right here!
Football-
The football team won vs Belmont 42-14 on Friday night. After Belmont scored an
opening touchdown, Woburn scored the next six unanswered with terrific play
from Chris Jeweet. He scored 3 rushing touchdowns and had about 150 yards.
Additionally, the Tanners move to 5-0 as Rob Maracayo, Tyler Joseph, and Deion
Williams all add touchdowns. Next Woburn prepares for Arlington, which is like
a mid-season Superbowl. Both teams are 5-0 and it will be an exciting game to
watch.
Boys
XC- Belmont also came into town for cross country where the boys earned their
first win of the season. Matt Dimauro won his first race this year with a time
of 16:36, and captains Alex Brodeur and Nolan Lundin both reached their long
term goals of finishing the course in under 18 minutes. (Brodeur- 17:45, Lundin
17:57). Lundin has imporved his time from his first race by a whopping 15
minutes as he ran a 33 minute time back in 2011.
Girls
XC- All-star Gina D’Addario said she was nervous with Belmont having another great
runner who could potentially upset D’Addario, something that hasn’t even been a
thought all season. But then D’Addario went out and broke Diane Connolly’s
course record of 18:08 set back in 1989. D’Addario ran a 17:52, securing her
spot as #1 in the top 10. Additionally, the girls won 20-41 as Lauren Anderson
finds herself now tied for 8th on the all time top 10 list by
running an impressive 19:03.
Volleyball-
They had a great comeback win against Watertown in 5 sets and they were swept
by Melrose. They came very close to stealing a set from the #1 team in the
state which will give them momentum going forward. Captain Maria Kieu earned
role of “libero” based on her performance in serve receive (In English: She got
extra playing time because she was doing so well).
Field Hockey-
The girls were still looking for their first win and in the 2 games they
played, they came up short in a 3-0 loss against Melrose and a 5-1 loss against
Lexington. Junior Michelle Miller scored against the state ranked Lexington
team, which will hopefully give them momentum going into senior night.
Other results at a glance:
Girls Soccer- Win 2-0 vs Melrose and 3-2
vs Winchester
Boys Soccer- Loss vs Watertown 3-2
Golf- Loss vs Lexington 43.5-28.5
For September 29-October 5:
A wild week in WMHS sports
by Tyler Movsessian
As September finally came to a close, the last week
in sports for the month of September got even better. Thrilling plays were made
as seniors got to match up against their foes for one last time. Believe it or
not, the athletes actually did wake up when September ended.
The
Woburn football team had consistently been cruising by their opponents and
winning by large margins. When they competed against Lexington, it was a
different story. The Tanners opened up the scoring, but Lexington came right
back with one of their own. Later in the 4th quarter, with Lexington
down 14-13, Jeff Costello threw his third touchdown of the night, missing the
two point conversion resulting in a score of 19-14. On the next drive, Chris
Morgan threw an interception, but a nice defense by Woburn got the ball back in
their hands for one last drive. A completion to Dennis Peary had the Tanners on
the Lexington-15 with five seconds to go; and, on the last play, Morgan hit
Tyler Joseph in the end zone for the game winning touchdown as the clock
expired. After this grueling event, Woburn stays undefeated at four wins, zero
losses. Chris Jewett was also responsible for this win, as he aided in a
touchdown for Woburn.
Boys
Cross Country finally found itself at the pond again, despite being a road meet,
as they took on Winchester looking for their first win. On this shortened 2.9
mile course, Woburn’s Matt DiMauro and Pat Haverty paced the first mile of the
race until Winchester’s Jacob Zuch took off, tying the course record at 15:55.
This led to a narrow victory for the Sachems and was the third time in four
meets that Woburn has lost by six or less points. Additionally, the varsity
team went to Franklin Park and placed ninth. Haverty led the way for Woburn,
who came in 23rd place with a time of 17:31.
The
girls team, who ran later that afternoon, took another victory against
Winchester. The four senior stars, Gina D’Adarrio, Katie Murray, Lauren Anderson,
and Yan Ni Kelly led the way as they
came in first, second, fourth and fifth respectively, to romp Winchester 45-18. The
girls also went to Franklin Park with high expectations and they sure lived up
to them. D’adarrio came in fourth overall with a time of 19:10 and Murray and
Anderson came in at 11th and 12th respectively. They
tried for the upset but they came in 2nd behind Hamilton, the number
one ranked girls cross country team in the state.
Soccer
took the field against Stoneham where they routed the Spartans 5-1. The hats
flew in this game as junior Morgan Bishop got a hat trick, that is, one person
scoring three points. This marked her ninth, tenth, and eleventh goals of the
year, putting the Tanners at 5-3-1. This was a great boost for the team as they
were coming off a 3-1 loss against Reading. They look forward to carrying this
momentum into next week.
Field
hockey also had pride on the line. They were looking to be without a win for
the entire month. However, they came up empty after a 3-1 loss to Arlington and
a 5-0 loss to Reading. Julie Doherty scored the only goal. Unfortunately,
Woburn was still without a win. Captains Kate McCall, Emily Crampton, Karen
Thifault and Kaitlyn Ryan look to keep team morale high going into October.
Golf
also took on Reading this week and they came up short, going down 42.5-29.5.
They still had a strong month, however, as they are sitting at 5-3-1, in a nice
spot to make the tournament.
Additionally,
Volleyball took on Reading where they played a great game against one of the
best teams in the league. Junior Elle Brennan was impressive as usual, guarding
the front very well. Senior Maria Kieu had a great pancake play (playing it off
the top of the hand) which helped the Tanners gain momentum. Each set was close,
but, unfortunately, the Tanner still got swept 3-0.
