A Review of Madam Secretary

by Ryan Johnston
If you are at all interested in government, or any government shows such as House of Cards or Scandal, Madam Secretary is for you.

Madam Secretary is a fictional show that follows a former CIA Analyst named Elizabeth McCord. After quitting her job at the CIA and becoming a college professor, she gets a call from the President requesting that she become the new Secretary of State, after the former one was killed in a plane crash. Elizabeth McCord was recognized because the former CIA Director became the President, and decided to nominate her after observing her CIA experience.

While the show focuses on mostly the Secretary’s job, it also focuses on her personal life as well. She is a mother with three kids and a loving husband who is a religious scholar. During the course of the show, there is a lot of conspiracy and intense situations that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. One example of a conspiracy that occurs through the plotline of the story is the killing of former Secretary of State.

Currently, season 1 of Madam Secretary can be watched on Netflix, however the second season is not yet available on Netflix. Currently, season 2 of Madam Secretary is streaming on CBS every Sunday night at 9pm. The season finale will be taking place this Sunday, and it is bound to be a great one. If you plan on binge watching, season 2 can be purchased on the iTunes Store or the Google Play Store for streaming.

For those who are fans of the show West Wing or House of Cards, I assure that you will be a fan of this show. The plot is very similar to House of Cards in that Madam Secretary becomes the Secretary of State, and then perhaps may even get the bid to become President of the United States. Secretary McCord becoming President was foreshadowed in the first episode of season 2, where Airforce One was compromised and the President was declared missing. According to the presidential line of succession, Secretary McCord had to take over for the POTUS.

Another clue foreshadowing that she would become President, is that the incumbent President mentions that her ratings as temporary President were far higher than his, and that she may be the real candidate for the presidency, and not him.

Overall, this show is full of twists and turns that anyone would expect when watching a show about high-level government officials. Tune in on Netflix or on Sundays at 8:00 on CBS!
